Studio 3A: Task 2: Objectified reflection

Reflection

This was a very interesting video detailing the Industrial Design process and many theories behind it. It really showed the relationship between the designer, the product and the consumer through many different people’s experience. Objects that we surround ourselves with are very personal, a personal choice. We tend to want to express ourselves with the objects that we have. We want people to see who we are through the things we use and own.

“Every Object, intentional or not, speaks to who put it there”

This quote was very nice. Every object is designed, therefore every little thing about the object is thought out and planned. Often today we don’t think or acknowledge these things, we merely use it. Every Object has a story behind it and I think it is actually quite sad that most people don’t know it.

“Ways to improve the way people do things, without have them really think about it”

This quote is also very inspiring. It is probably the goal of design in general; to improve someone’s experience without them really thinking about it. I guess it really sums up positive design where a product works so well that the user doesn’t even know its enhancing their experience; they think its a given.

“We designers have been working to stimulate people’s souls and minds”

This quote was also very interesting. It really made sense to me, to make products that would enhance the users experience to the point where they enjoy using the product, where they would want to use it because it was so stimulating to them. Example being that first potato peeler, I myself just watching the video wanted to try and use it because it just seems so nice to use.

At the end of the video however, there was a very serious wake up call. Sustainability is a huge issue now and should really be taken seriously.
